Fibroid Treatment
Fibroids are generally benign tumor structures that occur in about 30% of women who have completed their development process. They arise from the proliferation of smooth muscle structures in the uterus and can transform into malignant tumors in about 1% of cases. However, excessive growth of fibroids can cause problems related to pregnancy and menstrual patterns. Therefore, they can adversely affect women’s health. Surgery is the most successful method for treating fibroids that are excessively large or causing different problems in the reproductive system due to their location. After fibroid treatments performed with laparoscopic or hysteroscopic surgery, patients can return to their daily lives quickly and have a healthy reproductive system. Fibroids often do not show symptoms, and different types of fibroids can cause various functional disorders in the uterus.
Who Gets Fibroids?
Fibroids can occur in all women of reproductive age. Sometimes they are among the most common findings encountered during gynecological examinations. However, we can say that in some women, the risk of fibroids is higher, such as in women who have not given birth, women with excessive weight and obesity, and women with recurrent miscarriages.
How Is Open Fibroid Surgery Performed?
Open fibroid surgery is performed by making a horizontal or vertical incision in the abdominal area of the patient. By making this incision, access to the uterus and fibroids is achieved. After the fibroids are removed, the incision sites are sutured, and the surgery is completed. Open fibroid surgery is performed under general anesthesia so that the patient does not feel anything. The following steps are followed during the surgery:
- General anesthesia is administered to the patient.
- An incision of appropriate size and location is made in the abdominal area of the patient.
- The incision is opened, and access to the uterus is obtained.
- Fibroids in the uterus are cleaned out, and stitches are placed if necessary.
- Finally, the incision is closed, and the surgery is completed.
Closed Laparoscopic Fibroid Surgery
Closed fibroid surgery refers to the procedure of visualizing and removing fibroids using a device called a laparoscope. In this method, small incisions are made around the belly button or its vicinity, causing minimal aesthetic concern. The abdomen and abdominal area are inflated through these incisions. This inflation is done to better visualize the area. Fibroids are removed by reaching the vagina or the uterine wall through the incision made in the abdomen or abdominal area.
